CHE Graduate Student Receives U.S Department of Energy’s Science Graduate Student Research Award

Energy Grant RecipientsCongratulations to materials science and engineering graduate student Alex Kane and chemical engineering graduate student Jennifer Nill, who were both selected to receive the U.S. Department of Energy‘s Science Graduate Student Research Award.

Alex and Jennifer are among 52 SCGSR recipients who will conduct part of their doctoral dissertation research in one the DOE’s 12 national laboratories. Their proposed research projects address scientific challenges central to mission areas across the DOE’s six Office of Science’s research programs.

Alex’s project, “Depth Resolved Spin Textures in Perovskite Oxide Heterostructures,” will be performed at the Spallation Neutron Source, Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Jennifer’s project, “Novel in situ imaging and measurement technologies for biological systems science,” will be performed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The goal of the SCGSR program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories. The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory/facility in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories/facilities.
